A beanie is one of the most efficient and—when worn properly—stylish accessory you could own. And no, they’re not exclusively reserved for winter months. Hat-hair be damned.

Beyond its practical benefits, a good knit hat has the power to instantly upgrade any outfit, whether you're running an errand or a business meeting. Here is everything you need to know about how to wear a beanie.

How To Spot It:

Thick, chunky ribbing, a shallow crown, the general sense that a naval seaport might be nearby.

How to Get The Right One:

Grab one that you can fits snug on your head. I also like them best when they're in navy, black or grey, which means they go with everything.

How to Wear It:

With classic-but-refined pieces like a tailored white t-shirt with pleated trousers, turtlenecks with jeans, and your most badass plaid suit and sneaker combo.

Be warned: all beanies are not created equal. That's why I’ve done the work of narrowing down the best shapes, fabrics, and colors to ensure the one (or a few) you pick will be your cold weather confidant all winter.
