One of my fondest childhood memories was waking up each morning and smelling the fresh coffee coming from my parents’ kitchen. They never missed their morning “cafecito” (small coffee) – and I vividly remember the yellow can on the counter, it was always Café Bustelo.

THE EARLY YEARS

I didn’t grow up wanting to go to college. I wasn’t obsessed with higher education; it was never a path that I even considered. It was not a topic of conversation at the dinner table. Going to college felt more like a privilege. The one thing there was no shortage of was moral support. I can still hear my dad telling me how great he was sure I was going to be. I entered college in 2003. Shortly after arriving a fire rose from inside me which then turned into an insatiable hunger for success. There was no limit to what I could do. It was all the fuel I needed.

Today I stand before you–a proud Latino–who’s been able to live out so many dreams thanks to the education I received right here in the United States. A country that is still known to many of us as a country of opportunity, inclusion and prosperity.

This year I am excited to be partnering with Café Bustelo and the “El Café del Futuro” scholarship program–an essay contest for students of Latino descent living in the U.S. in partnership with the Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities.

The essay should describe how your Hispanic/Latino heritage, family, and the community in which you grew up has inspired your desire and motivation to obtain a college degree and how you plan to give back to your community. The deadline to enter is May 26th, 2017 – click here and apply today.
