Suede Jackets Are Back
Suede jackets come around every year and this year has been a particularly good one for the suede bomber.
Call it an infatuation with ’70s-era masculinity, but for whatever reason, designers didn’t just pump out standard-issue leathers this fall and winter season. Instead, they made the kind of buttery-soft, just-slouchy-enough outerwear that looks like it was hand-picked from the “Display Only” section of a vintage store.
A suede jacket will make any outfit, even a white tee and basic jeans, look more put together. Suede just looks luxe, no matter what color it comes in and no matter what price you’re paying for it. As with any menswear investment, you can go for the bank-account-draining best or the more manageable mass-market version, but no matter which suede jacket you pick up, it’s guaranteed to make you look your best this time of year.
Of the jackets on offer now, I’m partial to those done in rich black or cognac-color suede because of their retro swagger. Of course there’s a whole spectrum of neutrals—and some colors, too—that’ll transition nicely into the spring and turn you into a leading man just the same. Find the one that speaks to you and double down on it; with any luck, you’ll still be wearing it in five, ten years. Long enough to ride the wave until the next great leather jacket season comes around.
