Don’t be afraid of a little velvet, and by little, I mean only your jacket should be velvet. The fabric is appealing in a jacket because its weight creates structure and its sheen adds a festive touch. Try colored velvet (like gray, forest green or burgundy) and anchor the look with either black trousers — or if you’re feeling bold — colored jeans and a bow tie.

Let’s say you live in a city that gets warm in the summer months and that is populated by many well-dressed individuals. Let’s further say that you value comfort just as much as appearance and that you’re brave and confident enough that you’d like to project a certain swankiness during those warm days. Can you do it? Can you pull of shorts and still be a well-dressed man? Of course you can. However, let me warn you, the points for difficulty are pretty high when it comes to the cheeky matter of truncated trousers in the city.
The primary pitfall of wearing shorts is the socks. Most shorts look best with no socks – or at least the illusion of it. Some stores like H&M carry barely visible footie socks. You should also know how to pick the right shoe. Go for thin and not too chunky, perhaps loafers, boat shoes, driving shoes, or suede bucks. A carefully selected sandal can also be appropriate. The final piece of the formula is the jacket. If you’re going to pair one with your shorts, don’t match them like a suit.
Finally, as with any fashion decision: if you’re going to wear it, do it confidently.
